Moissanite - An Affordable Alternative To A diamond Engagement Ring Moissanite, as talked about earlier, could be an excellent alternative to a diamond engagement ring. One of its main properties that we talked about is its brilliance. You get a brilliant sparkle for a lot less than the cost of an equivalent diamond. Couple the moissanite stone with a beautiful platinum band for example and you have a stunning ring. Moissanite is becoming more popular than other alternatives such as cubic zirconia, cut glass and rhinestone for obvious reasons and when in combination with platinum for an engagement ring, is becoming increasingly so. This is despite platinum being more expensive than gold and moissanite more expensive then cubic zirconia etc. However the extra expensive of platinum is compensated by its durable qualities. Couple this with the hardness and durability of the moissanite and you have an excellent choice. Don’t forget that moissanite, otherwise known by its scientific name silicon carbide, is the second strongest substance known to man. A diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale of hardest, moissanite at 9.4. Choosing a moissanite ring over a diamond equivalent will probably mean that you can afford a bigger stone for the setting without compromising on the appearance of the ring. Even though moissanite does not have the same clarity as natural diamond it has extra brilliance. Without the use a high-powered microscope, even a jeweler may struggle to tell the difference between a diamond ring and a moissanite one. That’s how good of an alternative it is to natural diamond. The average person on the street therefore is not going to know any different and will think it a diamond. One word of warning though, if she doesn’t already know, it’s probably best that you tell your fiancé that the ring is moissanite and not natural diamond just in case she goes to get it appraised. You wouldn’t want all your hard work destroyed over a simple misunderstanding. |
